Bols, one of the oldest distilleries in the world, has been brewing liquors in Amsterdam since 1575. But it wasn’t until a century later, when the founder’s grandson, Lucas Bols, took control that the brand became a success. A major shareholder in the Dutch East India Company, he brought exotic herbs and spices back to Amsterdam to make hundreds of different liquors.

These recipes were passed on throughout the centuries, so the quality of the product has always remained the same. In the 19th century, Bols developed a new refined gin recipe with Genever, sometimes known as Dutch Gin. This was heavily marketed to the ‘on trade market’ in the United States, where the brand played an important role in the cocktail revolution. After this, the Bols brand continued to grow and grow.
