Things to do in Douro Valley

4.7/5 (65)

Douro Valley, located in northern Portugal, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its terraced vineyards, landscapes, and rich cultural heritage. It’s one of the oldest wine regions in the world, famous for producing Port wine thanks to its unique microclimate that’s perfect for growing grapes.

No trip to the famous wine valley is complete without tasting the drink which makes this area so famous. Make sure to enjoy a glass of the famous local Green Wine (Vinho Verde), Port and DOC Douro wines which are made using this area's native grape varieties. Wine lovers can visit the vineyards, learn about traditional production methods and get up close to the action.

In addition to wine, the Douro Valley is known for traditional villages and historic estates steeped in history and Roman and Moorish influences. Enjoy the outdoors and hop on a river cruise to wind down the Douro River, or take to the hills for some hiking across scenic landscapes.

“Our guide was excellent. The trip overall was good with the visit to the Croft vineyard being first class. Our lunch venue was great with good company. The river trip was over crowded with a total lack of commentary for what was a fascinating and historic landscape.”

“Fabulous day ! A must do when around Porto. The Dourro Valley is a joy to behold, and provides a remarkable landscape and testimony to centuries of hard work and innovation in terms of wine production. A feature of the day is undoubtedly the diversity of people on the tour itself.”
