Things to do in Santos Juanes Church
Originally built in the 13th century on the site of a former mosque, the Santos Juanes Church is one of the oldest churches in Valencia, Spain. This historic Roman Catholic church is also popularly known as the San Juan del Mercado Church due to its location next to the city’s Central Market.
The Santos Juanes Church is distinguished by its Baroque facade, central clock tower, and large ceiling frescoes. On the outside, you’ll see a prominent image of the Virgen del Rosario and statues of Saint John the Baptist, Saint John the Evangelist, Saint Francesco Borgia, and Saint Luis Bertrán, while the interior contains elaborate frescoes by Spanish painter Antonio Palomino.
The Santos Juanes Church has been reconstructed various times throughout the years due to numerous fire accidents. The church was first built in a Gothic style and subsequently restored with a Baroque aesthetic, thus resulting in its current architectural blend of Gothic and Baroque styles. The building was officially declared a National Historic and Artistic Monument in 1947.
